Rio de Janeiro State University is one of the largest universities in Brazil. The Institute of Social and Political Studies (IESP) is a leading research and graduate studies institute in Latin America. It was the first graduate school in Brazil to offer a doctoral degree programme in political science. Since its foundation, IESP has maintained a leading role in the fields of political science and sociology. Its faculty members have acquired their professional training at top Brazilian, American and European universities. IESP’s main research fields include politics in contemporary Latin America, analysis of foreign policy and regionalization process, comparative democracy and development, public policy, media, political communication and public opinion, globalization, and violence and sociability, among many others.
