Ben Tonra

Professor, University College Dublin

Ben Tonra is Jean Monnet Professor ad personam of European Foreign, Security and Defence Policy and Professor of International Relations at the UCD School of Politics and International Relations. His research interests centre on European foreign, security and defence policy, Irish foreign  and security policy and International Relations theory. He completed his doctoral studies at the University of Dublin (Trinity College) in 1996 with a study on Danish, Dutch and Irish foreign policy in EU cooperation. His major publications include; The SAGE Handbook of European Union Foreign Policy (two volumes, with Aasne Kalland Arstad, Edith Drieskens, Katie V Laatikain and Knud Erik Joergensen, SAGE, 2015), Global Citizen and European Republic; Irish Foreign Policy in Transition (Manchester University Press, 2007) and Europeanisation of National Foreign Policy: Dutch, Danish and Irish Foreign Policies in CFSP (Ashgate 2001).  He has served as Visiting Professor at the University of Luxembourg, the University of Nice and at Aberystwyth University. He is also the chair of the Royal Irish Academy's International Affairs Standing Committee.
