Thomas Diez (University of Tübingen), who leads the GLOBUS workpackage on the EU and climate justice, gave the final keynote lecture at the 2020 Marmara Conference on European Studies (MCES) in Istanbul. In his lecture, he defended an alternative conception of Normative Power Europe 2.0 as an ethical stance against classic empiricist and non-reflexive understandings of what he called 'Normative Power Europe 1.0'. As part of his lecture, Diez argued that Normative Power Europe 2.0 involves a realisation that impartiality as a global justice category presupposes mutual recognition and cannot be thought of as a one-way street.
