The refugee crisis: Between human tragedy and symptom of the structural crisis of European integration

GLOBUS participant Agustín José Menéndez from the University of Oslo gave a presentation at the University of Bologna.

'The arrival in massive numbers of refugees has revealed many of the contradictions at the core of European and national policies and politics, including the massive gap between the pledge to provide asylum and actual asylum practice; the unsustainable character of the fast distinction between (legitimate) refugees and ‘economic migrants’; the limits of asymmetric integration; the deepening of the joint-decision trap, and European government oscillating between inaction, manifestly inadequate action and emergency measures.'

These and other reflections were at the center of Prof. Menéndez' lecture reflections that triggered a stimulating debate with the students of the Laurea Magistrale in 'International Relations', coming from all around Europe.

The presentation was given as part of the course "Europe in World Politics" at the Department of Social and Political Sciences, University of Bologna.
